Reading challenges fulfilled: book #52 for the year, and #16 in my Finish the Series challenge, finishing up the series Title comes from: Perhaps it refers to the Department of Homeland Security, that is doing such a good job of taking away our rights in the name of security, or protecting the homeland. You definitely want to read Little Brother before this one, so you know who all the characters are and their history. Cory Doctorow is a digital rights activist, and his novels reflect many of his personal opinions. WikiLeaks is a good thing and net neutrality is critical and we all need to do our part to make sure our rights don’t start eroding. The government abuses its power and hackers take them down, protecting the individual’s rights along the way. This book definitely has a message it’s trying to get across.

I did learn how to take the battery out of my phone, when I want to ensure no one is tracking me. I feel like I should put ParanoidAndroid on my phone, use extra encryption on my email, and tape over the webcam on my laptop, just in case. Eventually, Marcus stops reacting to the problem that form around him and makes a plan to get the information out while keeping himself and his friends safe.įinal thoughts: Reading Doctorow always makes me paranoid about technology and how much the government or big business is tracking me. Turns out his laptop has been hacked by a group of hacktivisits who think he’s being a coward. Marcus gets the old gang together to go through the documents, but somehow they’re leaking to the web. He’s supposed to release the key so the public can access the incriminating files, but it will endanger his new job as webmaster to Joseph Noss, running as an independent for Senator of California. Masha and Zeb are grabbed on the last day of Burning Man by Marcus’ old tormentor, Carrie Johnstone. She has a giant file of leaked documents and she proved a key to their encryption to Marcus as security. Summary: Marcus and Ange are at Burning Man, where they are approached by Masha.
